Avoiding iPhoto starting up when iPhone is plugged in

Every time I plugged my iPhone to my iMac, iPhoto used to start up and ask if I want to import the photos. It was very irritating, especially as I could not figure out how to change this behavior.

If you find this annoying too, take a look at this post. It is all Image Caputre’s fault!

They came in their Pajamas to LHC / Fermilab Party

As promised they came in their Pajamas to Fermilab’s LHC Party to watch the first beam! Some coverage of work done by Science Grid folks on the LHC and various detectors.

We are alive!!!

The first beam at LHC went well and we are all alive. Congratulations to all those involved!

But … the full energy beam is still a year away.

So, all those who were waiting for world to end, do not worry, you have another event to look forward to within a year.

LHC, Black Holes and End of World

OK, the world is going to end tomorrow. Again!

I think most humans don’t really believe their good luck. How come everything fell into place for us to happen? Most fall back on God and that there is a plan.

But every so often when the world is declared to end soon, I feel hopeful. Looks like deep inside people do not really believe their good luck that God happened, had a plan which made everything fall into place for us to happen. The guts say this is a random event and in spite of all the order, things could come crumbling down. That emptiness inside makes some panic and some seek.

LHC seems like becoming the ultimate expression of the two kinds. On one side is bunch of seekers who want to know why and how everything fell into place. On other hand are those who are in panic, again!

I suggest the Science Friday podcast ‘Massive Particle Accelerator Is Ready To Go (mp3)‘ in which Fermilab Physicst Dan Hooper describes what is really going to happen!

“Hopefully we will! It would be great if we create black hole. But they will be harmless black hole. The reason we know that is because these sorts of collisions every second of everyday. The particles from space are striking earth’s atmosphere and these are called Cosmic rays … those collisions are no different than one that will go on in LHC. The only thing that makes LHC different is we can look that the collisions.”

So, if world is going to end tomorrow, actually, it should have ended many many years ago.

The energy that LHC will generate *within its confines* existed in nature *all around* moments before the big bang. The physicists will be able to observe particles that existed then (and no longer now) in nature. This some are calling a time machine and some recreation of big bang.

Lets us see how the first beam goes. They will not be cranking it up to full and will go step by step. Stephen Hawking is betting LHC folks at CERN will not find Higgs Boson. Let us see how it goes. We will all be around to see how it went!

Fermilab refuses to go down quietly – Discovers “doubly strange” particle

When LHC goes online, the rest will wilt under its High Energy shadow. What looks like the last discovery of a sub atomic particle before LHC takes over, Dzero at Fermilab has discovered a ‘doubly strange’ particle.

The Indian institutes that are part of Dzero are:

Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), Bombay, INDIA
Delhi University , Delhi, INDIA
Panjab University, Chandigarh, INDIA

A big congrats to all at Dzero and Fermilab!

1st Beam at LHC, CERN – Party at Fermilab

Fermilab is inviting members to a pajama party to watch and celebrate first beam at LHC. This is one event I wish I could attend!

‘Welcome Relief’ – Amarnath Tangle in Jammu Untangles

People celebrating resolution

From Daily Excelsior:

Describing the agreement reached to solve the Amarnath issue as a “welcome relief”, Rajya Sabha MP Karan Singh today asked the Centre and the state governments to take measures to try and make up the massive losses incurred by Jammu and Kashmir during the agitation.

In a statement here, he asked all stakeholders in the Jammu as well as Kashmir regions to accept the agreement in “good grace”.

“Apart from the reconstitution of the Sri Amarnath Shrine Board, what is urgently needed are measures by the Centre, the state Government and civil society to try and make up the massive losses that have been incurred both in Jammu and Kashmir by disruption of normal trade, commerce, tourism and daily life,” he in a statement here.

Singh also asked the Government to take special measures to help students overcome the backlog so that they do not lose an academic year.

For this purpose, coaching classes will be required at the school and college levels. “I also hope that compensation to the next of kin of those who died in the course of this prolonged agitation, both in Jammu and Kashmir, is paid expeditiously,” he added.
