Sync iPhone w/ iCal w/ Google Calendar w/ Outlook Calendar

OK … for various reasons I have ended up with various calendars. Now that I have an iPhone, I am trying to sync all of them.

First, Microsoft Outlook and Google Calendar:

This link can in handy. I downloaded the google app and chose 2 way sync.

Second, Google Calendar and iCal:

This came in handly. Now this allowed information from Google Calendar to copy to iCal. So, I will have to avoid creating calendar entries in iCal if I want them to sync across.

This leads to an issue: If I add a calendar entry in my iPhone, how do I sync it across? Thanks fully, there is an option.

Third, iPhone and Microsoft Outlook:

I usually sync my iPhone with iMac at home. I have unchecked the ‘Automatically sync when this iPhone is connected’. Initially, as I do not like someone doing something to my things with my asking someone to do it. Get it!?

On Windows, I downloaded iTunes. Then I started Microsoft Outlook. I then plugged in my iPhone and auto sync didn’t trigger, as expected. In ‘Info’ tab, I selected sync Calendar.

Now, all my entries made via iPhone get sync-ed across.

iPhone Bluetooth

What!!? I come to know that Bluetooth on iPhone allows only for headphone. You can not pair iPhone to a phone and iPhone to a computer. I have unsuccessfully tried pairing iPhone to a Nokia phone. I have a try pairing with a PC. Don’t they know such kind of ‘communication gaps’ can lead to ‘divorce’!?

Where is the EDGE?

So I got an SMS from Airtel saying that LIVE is available on my phone and  need to call 121 for manual configuration. I call 121. The kind soul guides me through the settings.

Step 1: Go to main menu

Step 2: Select Settings

Step 3: Select General

Step 4: Select Network

Step 5: Select EDGE

Now, I do not see any EDGE setting on my phone. He asks me to read out all options. No EDGE! Finally he says call back again on Monday as EDGE team is works only Mon-Fri. Now I wait for Monday to go online!

Update (25-08): I got a bunch of SMS saying Airtel LIVE is configured. I should call 121. I call 121 and they say, “No go to the store”. Went to the store. They did something (she said ‘Software Update’) and EDGE is working. But I still do not see the EDGE setting.

The iPhone experience

So on Aug 22, 2008 I bought an iPhone. The store told me that either I pay by cash or pay them the 2% that bank charges them. This was a shock as this is an official Airtel store. Note-to-self: Need to figure out if Airtel or the store is at fault by asking for this extra. Will share with you my experience!

Dr karan Singh proposes a administrative solution — Is anyone listening?

The five point formula:

1. Governor Vohra should be considered for some other state where his administrative experience and skills can be better utilised
2. General J J Singh be appointed as Governor of J and K
3. The Amarnath Shrine Board can be reconstituted under a new chairman with members from the Hindu community in J and K including Kashmiri Pandits
4. For chairman he suggested the name of Chief Justice (Retd) A.S Anand who also belongs to the Jammu & Kashmir State.
5. While the land should continue to remain with the Forest Department, he said that the State Government should work out and announce a time bound programme for construction of adequate facilities for pilgrims including shelters, cooking, sanitary and other arrangements.

A news and a picture you will never see in national media

The news:

In the hospital where my dad works there was a protest where people protested in the way the land allocation was revoked and talked about inability understand why the government would do so. Included in the rally were the members of staff who happened to be Muslims from Jammu.

The picture:

Protest in Channi Himmat, Jammu

Whose protest is it anyway?

From Hindu:

“RSS, VHP, Bajrang Dal and Hindu Mahasabha leaders form the core of the Sangharsh Samiti (spearheading the agitation in Jammu against revocation of land to Amarnath shrine Board) and are backing the agitation. They have the support of BJP,” party spokesman Manish Tewari told reporters here.

This sounds too convenient. So I tried to find out, who is “spearheading” this agitation. Thanks fully after 30 days or so into the protests, some newspaper did actually try to find the answer than choose the convenient answer.

Do read The signs by four in IE.

3. Dinesh Bharati: Affiliation – “Communal”. Mahant of Dharmal’s Radha Krishna temple
4. Ashok Gupta: Affiliation – “Communal”. President J&K Shiv Sena

Supported cast:

1. Raman Bhalla: Affiliation – “Secular”. Minister in Congress government led by Gulam Nabi Azad and Congress MLA.
2. Yogesh Sawhney: Affiliation – “Secular”. Minister in Congress government led by Gulam Nabi Azad and Congress MLA.
3. Sham Lal Sharma: Affiliation – “Secular”. Congress MLA.
4. Bar Association of Jammu (BAJ): Affiliation – “Do lawyers have any?”. BAJ has set up a free legal aid cell for those injured during the agitation. So far, the cell has facilitated release of over 200 people arrested by police during curfew and demonstration.
5. Non-emergency medical staff that takes casual day off to join the protest.

So I am wondering why would Congress spokesman Manish Tewari call this a BJP agitation?

When the mainstream does not take up a cause … look who does!

Read this article:

Jammu’s Hindu uprising

When national mainstream does not rise up to address the problems and issues, the ones on the fringes take over! This is, in fact, the only article that I have read that is telling the whole story. Wish someone in Times of India or NDTV or CNN-IBN had done there job. We could have been spared sone of the “un-parliamentary language”.
